With
so many hosting companies on the Internet today offering such
a wide variety of options, the question arises, how can you
tell a good host from a bad host?
At
Top10HostingCompanies.com, we're able to answer this question
by using our extensive resources to gather and process valuable
information from many of top hosting companies online. With
this information we can rate each hosting company based on
Speed, Uptime, Service, and Price. Below is a breakdown of
how we use each of these four criteria in our ratings.
Speed
-
We determine a website's speed based on the average loading
time of the hosting companies main website. Loading speed
is measured in milli-seconds and ratings have been determined
based on the following speeds:
0
- 75ms - Excellent
76 - 100ms - Above Average
101 - 125ms - Average
125+ms - Needs Improvement
In
addition, we also use a program that rates each host based
on a Grade of A+ to C-. This grade is based on various server
specifications and settings as well as loading time. Lower
grades tend to have more problems when servers experience
heavy load times.
Uptime
- Uptime
is measured two ways; continuously and monthly. These two
numbers are then averaged to give a more current and accurate
uptime rating. This may cause our numbers to be slightly higher
or lower than the actual uptime, but we feel that this gives
you, the consumer, a more accurate picture of each companies
current status. We detemine the uptime ratings as follows:
99.5
- 100% - Excellent
99.2 - 99.4% - Above Average
98.5 - 99.1 - Average
>98.4 - Needs Improvement
Service
-
We monitor numerous customer rating websites and gather the
average customer ratings and the total amount of customer
votes per site, which we then combine and process to calculate
the average customer service ratings for each hosting company.
We determine the service ratings as follows:
7.1
- 10 - Excellent
6.0 - 7.0 - Above Average
4.0 - 5.9 - Average
>3.9 - Needs Improvement
Price
-
To equally rate the price for each company, we take each company's
basic hosting plan and calculate the monthly payments based
on one year. The monthly price we show includes any setup
fees so you know what the real monthly fees are.
As each company offers different services in their plans,
we determine that based on price alone, monthly fees of $10
or less are an excellent value, and fees $11-20 are a good
value.
In
addition to the four ratings above, we also research each
companies pros and cons
based on their basic hosting plan and other services. This
information is valuable in determining strengths, weaknesses,
bonus features, discounts or extra fees that may apply.
We
also find out background
information about each company, like their location, financial
situation, and their number of current customers if we can.
This helps you to know who you are dealing with and if they
are going to be around in the future.
Finally,
we take each of the four criteria individually, (speed, uptime,
service, and price) and weigh them on a scale. We then add
up all four weights for each hosting company to come up with
an overall
rating.
The 10 companies with the highest overall ratings become the
Top 10 Hosting Companies.
